Hong Kong SAR
For a city that is visually dominated and known by its skyline, most of Hong Kong is actually its glorious harbour or the wonderful natural landscapes and mountains that surround the city centre.
And, what a centre! Home to spectacular architecture and skyscrapers, arguably the finest collection of (local & international) restaurants in the world, yet still the vestiges of a heritage that is also such a wonderful feature of Hong Kong. Explore the city by boat, by escalators through the heights of Central, or by one of the world’s most efficient public transport systems on tram and train. However you do it, you’ll marvel as you move from one neighbourhood to another, swapping steel & glass skyscrapers for the colonial relics from British rule and beyond. And, all the while, you can be taking in the range of shopping options for which Hong Kong has become famous.
Overlooking all of this is The Peak, the focus of a visit to Hong Kong, and a great place to get started, as it gives you great context and such an amazing view of the city that wraps around its lower regions. Hop on a Peak Tram, and within minutes you’re at the top, taking in the views or setting off on one of the many walking trails…or just enjoying an ice cream from one of the many eateries at the top.
Back down at ground level again, make sure you take in the spectacular harbour light show each and every evening, with the greatest vantage points being on the Tsim Tsa Tsui promenade on the Kowloon side - not to be missed.
Escaping the city, families and kids (& the young at heart) revel in the delights of Ocean Park & Hong Kong Disneyland, while further afield the more adventurous can take in hiking or exploring some of the smaller villages that have escaped the trappings of Hong Kong. Whatever you choose, you’ll find that you’ve only just scratched the surface of this city that has so many layers and delights, all around the next corner.
